Uphall is in the Central Scotland district of West Lothian.  Uphall has a population in excess of 4,500 inhabitants and West Lothian has a population in excess of 160,000. The district is located between Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city, and Glasgow.

Uphall is located about three quarters of mile to the west of Broxburn and is thirteen miles to the west of Edinburgh. Uphall was once known as Strathbrock, which means 'valley of badgers'. (also the meaning of Broxburn).
